How to tell if your Social Media is working for you?

So, you’ve been posting.
You’ve got some hashtags going.
You might’ve even done a Reel that took three hours and got… 17 views (including your mum and your dog’s account).

But here’s the big question:
Is any of it actually working?

Let’s find out. Social media should be doing more than just keeping your content calendar warm.

1. People Are Interacting

Likes are nice. Likes are polite. But if your posts are only getting the occasional thumbs-up from Kevin in accounts, it might be time to reassess.

What you want to see:

Comments (from people who aren’t on your payroll)

  1. Shares (a modern form of digital applause)

  2. Saves (aka “this is actually useful”)

  3. DMs (hello! Preferably from more than just salesmen)

Bottom line? If your audience is talking back, you’re doing something right.
If your posts feel like shouting into a canyon… it might be time to rethink what you’re saying.

2. You’re Getting Traffic—Not Just Crickets

Your website and/or your venue should be seeing some action if your social media is doing its job.
If no one’s clicking through, you’re basically just handing out flyers in a tunnel.

Here’s what you want to see:
1. Website visits from social: Head into your analytics (Google Analytics, website dashboard) and check if are people arriving from Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc. If not, you’re missing something

2. Click-throughs on links: Are people clicking your bio links? Tapping that “Shop Now”? If you're posting great content but no one’s taking action, something’s getting lost in translation.

3. Low bounce rate: Are people arriving and immediately leaving? That’s a red flag. You want them to stick around, click a few things, and maybe even make themselves at home (and a purchase).

Your content shouldn’t just look nice—it should inspire action. You’re not posting for decoration. You’re posting to guide people somewhere. If there is no visible traffic, you’re posting just for the vibes.

3. Your Followers Are Growing—and They’re Not Bots Named ‘CryptoSteve’

Look, we all love to see that follower count go up. It’s a little dopamine hit, right? But numbers alone don’t tell the full story—especially when half your “new fans” seem to have usernames like @GetRickQuickGreg or @HotDealsForex12.

Growth only matters when the followers are real, relevant, and remotely interested in what you do.

If you’re a boutique bakery and suddenly attracting accounts from blockchain bros and spammy sunglasses sellers… something’s off.

Things to think about:

  1. Are your new followers engaging?
A growing audience that says nothing is a growing ghost town. Healthy growth should come with an uptick in likes, comments, shares, and clicks. No interaction? That’s a red flag.

  2. Are they sticking around?
If your follower count jumps and then drops a week later, it’s either bots clearing out or people realizing your content isn’t for them. Sustainable growth is steady and organic.

  3. Do they align with your goals?
If you're B2B, but your audience is mostly lifestyle bloggers from Bali, something's mismatched.

Vanity metrics might look good, but real growth means attracting people who get you, need you, and eventually—buy from you. Everything else is just digital clutter.

So… Is Your Social Media Working?

If your social feed is all effort and no outcome, it might be time for a reality check (and maybe a little strategy refresh).
